Six Last-Minute Christmas Market Trips You Can Still Plan This Year

Still dreaming of a European Christmas market trip but worried you've left it too late? There's absolutely still time! From late November through early January, cities across Europe transform with twinkling lights, festive markets, and a holiday atmosphere that's worth traveling for, even on short notice. Whether this is your first trip to Europe or you've visited before and want to experience it dressed for the holidays, these six destinations are easy to reach, packed with festive cheer, and simple to plan at the last minute.

Each city on this list is a major airport hub with plentiful flights, well-connected train stations, and multiple Christmas markets spread throughout. That means you can book now without overthinking, land in one city, and have several festive experiences right at your doorstep. Every destination also offers worthwhile day trips less than two hours away by train, so you can expand your holiday experience without changing hotels. While December weekends command peak-season prices, mid-range accommodations are still available if you act quickly.

Note: Train times are approximate and all hotel prices reflect weekend rates during peak December season. As American writers, we've kept distances in miles where relevant, though European train schedules typically show journey times rather than distances.

Paris, France

Paris doesn't just decorate for Christmas; it completely transforms. The city's grand boulevards glow with elaborate light displays, department store windows become theatrical stage sets, and cozy cafés offer perfect respites between market visits. Already known for romance and culture, Paris feels especially magical during December. And because it's one of the world's best-connected cities, with countless flight options and excellent rail links, it's an effortless choice for a spontaneous holiday trip.

Best Christmas Markets in Paris

Rather than one central market, Paris offers festive villages throughout the city. The Tuileries Garden Market (La Magie de Noël) stands as the largest, complete with rides, food stalls, and sparkling lights with the Louvre as backdrop. At Hôtel de Ville, the City Hall square becomes a glowing winter wonderland with nightly light shows and traditional wooden chalets.

For something more intimate, the Saint-Germain-des-Prés Market features artisanal gifts and cozy vibes in one of Paris's most charming neighborhoods. Over in La Défense, the modern business district hosts the city’s biggest market, with more than 300 chalets selling international crafts, holiday treats, and decorations beneath the impressive skyline.

For a classic photo op, the small market at the base of the Eiffel Tower lets you sip mulled wine while admiring the Iron Lady all lit up for the season. And up in Montmartre, the Christmas market by the Sacré-Cœur pairs wooden chalets with sweeping views of Paris, making it one of the most atmospheric settings in the city.

Things to Do in Paris Beyond Christmas Markets

December in Paris can feel like stepping onto a movie set. Before you wander the Champs-Élysées under its canopy of lights, head up the Arc de Triomphe during the day for sweeping views of the city. Art lovers can’t go wrong with an afternoon at the Louvre, Musée d'Orsay, or the more intimate Musée Rodin. While we do love the Louvre, Musée Rodin is our person favorite!

Need to thaw out between markets? Order the rich hot chocolate at Angelina, famous for being one of the best in the city, or grab a cozy steak frites lunch at a neighborhood bistro like Comme un Bouillon. In the evening, a Seine River cruise shows off the Eiffel Tower’s hourly sparkle from the best angle possible.

And don’t forget to stop by Galeries Lafayette Haussmann to see the incredibly elaborate Christmas display that’s decorated differently every year! If you’re visiting in early December, you’ll even find pop-up ice skating rinks at spots like Hôtel de Ville and the La Defense Christmas market, perfect for leaning into the season.
