Navigating the Language in Kastelruth / Castelrotto
One important thing to note before we get started: this area of Italy primarily speaks German! Many also speak Italian and English, but you never really know which language you’ll be greeted with, so it’s best to come equipped to say “Hallo,” “Buongiorno,” and “Hello!”
You’ll also find that nearly every destination has two names: one in Italian and one in German. Apple Maps and Google Maps tended to list the Italian names; locals tended to refer to the town’s German names; and the street signs and local posters displayed both names.
You’ll see that we go back and forth on the names, but we more often refer to the destinations by their Italian names. San Candido is the Italian version of the city’s name, and Innichen is the German version. You’ll see both represented here, but you’ll see the destination referred to as Innichen slightly more often.
How to Get to Kastelruth
By Air: If you are coming from Europe, you can easily fly into Innsbruck Airport in Austria, the region's closest gateway. From Innsbruck, you can reach Kastelruth by train, bus, or car in under two hours. Verona Villafranca Airport is your next best option in Italy. If you are flying from another continent, Munich Airport in Germany or Milan Malpensa in Italy will likely be your major international hubs. Both offer strong train connections into the South Tyrol area.
By Train and Bus: Kastelruth is located in the beautiful Schlern region. To get there by public transit, you'll typically route through the main train stations in Brixen (Bressanone) or Bolzano (Bozen. From either station, you can hop on a regional bus that takes you up to the plateau and directly into the village.
By Car: If you’re driving around the Dolomites (we did!), Kastelruth would be a great short stop between Ortisei and Bolzano. It’s a little less than a 20-minute drive from Ortisei to Kastelruth and about a 40-minute drive from Kastelruth to Bolzano.
How to Get Around in Kastelruth
The village square is incredibly pedestrian-friendly, making walking the absolute best way to experience the Christmas market. Once you arrive, the historic town center is small and easy to navigate. You can easily stroll around the pastel buildings and the main market without needing public transit.
If you want to head up the mountain for skiing or panoramic views, the cable cars to the Seiser Alm (Alpe di Siusi) are easily accessible just a short trip away. While you don't need a car to enjoy Kastelruth itself, renting one is highly recommended if you plan on exploring the wider Dolomites region on your own schedule.
Kastelruth Christmas Market Location, Opening Dates, & Operating Times
The Kastelruth / Castelrotto Christmas Market takes place right in the historic village square, called Krausplatz / Piazza Kraus, beautifully set in the shade of the town's majestic baroque bell tower. The layout is wonderfully cozy, making it easy to grab a warm drink and wander past the lovingly decorated wooden stalls.
One of the most captivating parts of wandering around Kastelruth during the holidays is the incredibly charming, local atmosphere. This is one of the smaller markets in the region, which means it feels like a true local hangout rather than an overwhelming tourist destination.
The official 2026 Kastelruth Christmas Market dates have been announced! The market will run on weekends from November 28, 2026, to December 27, 2026. The regular opening hours for the market stalls are typically on weekends from 10:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.
Holiday hours do vary, so keep these exceptions in mind:
December 24: 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
December 25: Closed

Does Kastelruth Christmas Market Have Mugs?
Yes! They have a one cute mug design. In 2025, the mug was a clear glass with an image of the iconic bell tower of Kastelruth / Castelrotto. It’s cute! But it’s a little hard to see the design while it’s full of dark red mulled wine or cocoa! Of course designs often change from year to year, so this is just a reference point from a past design. But if you’re a Christmas market mug collector, you’re in luck! The deposit for the mug is €5.
Though, this has never happened to us outside of Italy, but as we didn’t want to take this mug home, when we went to pay for our drinks, the vendor asked “are you keeping the mug or returning it?” We responded that we’ll be returning it, and they said “if you stand near hear, you don’t have to pay the deposit and just return it when you’re done.
Okay, honor system! We enjoyed our drinks by the massive Christmas tree just across from the booth, then returned the mugs like we promised when we were done. This also happened to us in Bolzano!
Foods & Drinks to Try in Kastelruth
Krapfen: A sweet, fried pastry that is often filled with fruit jams. They make for a perfect walking snack!
Spekulatius & Stollen: Classic spiced holiday cookies and rich, powdered sugar-coated bread that perfectly reflect the town's Alpine roots.
Apfelküchlein (Apple Fritters): Sweet, battered, and fried apple rings dusted in sugar. They make for a perfect walking snack!
Glühwein & Apple Mulled Cider: The hot mulled wine is an absolute must! But if you want a non-alcoholic option, the hot apple cider simmered with spices will absolutely keep you warm as you explore.

What to Buy at the Kastelruth Christmas Market

Felt Products: Look for traditional felt slippers and accessories. They're incredibly warm, regionally made, and perfect for winter.
Floral Decorations & Candles: The stalls offer handmade holiday decorations that make excellent souvenirs for your own tree at home.

Hotel Cavallino D'Oro Bed&Breakfast: (pictured above) Directly across from the Kastelruth’s Christmas market, this bed and breakfast has a lot of charm with antique furniture, wood paneled rooms, a sauna, and a fantastic breakfast.
Gschlunerhof: Slightly outside of the city center, but with many apartment amenities, hot tub, sauna, welcoming hosts, and phenomenal mountain views.
Solaia Hotel & Guesthouse: Just a short walk from the city center, this stay has en suite Alpine-style rooms with the local style of light-wood furnishings and parquet floors, spacious rooms, and balconies with wonderful mountain views. The hotel has a wonderful breakfast, pool, and on-site sauna.
What Else to See and Do in Kastelruth

Go Ice Skating: The town sets up a charming ice rink right next to the Christmas market, making for a perfect family-friendly activity in the center of the winter action.
