Innichen, also known as San Candido, is a picturesque Dolomites vacation destination that’s beautiful to visit in winter, and it also has a small yet charming Christmas market! In the Upper Puster Valley near Austria, Innichen is one of the key towns in the Three Peaks (3 Zinnen) region of the Dolomites. The two small yet authentically alpine markets in Innichen are absolutely worth a visit if you’re exploring Northern Italy for the holidays! Navigating the Language in Innichen / San Candido
One important thing to note before we get started is that this area of Italy primarily speaks German! Many also speak Italian and English, but you never really know which language you’ll be greeted with, so it’s best to come equipped to say “Hallo,” “Buongiorno,” and “Hello!”
You’ll also find that nearly every destination has two names: one in Italian and one in German. Apple Maps and Google Maps tended to list the Italian names; locals tended to refer to the town’s German names; and the street signs and local posters displayed both names.
You’ll see that we go back and forth on the names, but we more often refer to the destinations by their Italian names. San Candido is the Italian version of the city’s name, and Innichen is the German version. You’ll see both represented here, but you’ll see the destination referred to as Innichen slightly more often.

How to Get to Innichen for the Christmas Markets
By Air: If you are coming from Europe, you can easily fly into Innsbruck Airport in Austria, the closest gateway for this region. From Innsbruck, you can reach Bruneck by train or car in under an hour. Verona Villafranca Airport is your next-best option in Italy, with a straightforward train route north taking about three hours.
If you are flying from another continent, Munich Airport in Germany or Milan Malpensa in Italy will likely be your major international hubs. Both offer strong train connections into the Dolomites and South Tyrol area.
By Train: Innichen is located in the beautiful Upper Puster Valley. By train, you'll typically route through the Fortezza (Franzensfeste) railway station, which sits on the main Brenner line connecting Innsbruck to Verona. If you come from Innsbruck, the train ride to Fortezza takes about 1 hour 20 minutes. If you’re heading north from Bolzano to Fortezza, the train only takes a little over 35 minutes. From Fortezza, a regional train takes you directly to Innichen station in about 1 hour and 20 minutes. Booking your tickets in advance is a smart move since the holiday season brings plenty of travelers!
How to Get Around in Innichen
Innichen is a small town that’s easy to navigate. The town center is incredibly pedestrian-friendly, making walking the absolute best way to experience the Christmas market chalets. If you take the train, once you arrive at the station, the historic, pedestrianized town center is just a short, 10-minute flat walk away. You can easily stroll around without ever needing public transit.
While you don't need a car to enjoy San Candido itself, renting one is highly recommended if you plan on exploring the wider Dolomites region or neighboring markets like Lake Braies on your own schedule. We drove to Innichen and found a small parking lot at the edge of the town center, which made for a short ten-minute walk through town to the Christmas market. It even has a nice, paid public toilet, which is often tough to find!
If you want to head up the mountain for skiing or panoramic views, the 3 Zinnen Dolomites Ski Resort lifts are easy to access.
Innichen Christmas Market Locations, Opening Dates, & Operating Times
The Dolomites Christmas Market takes place in the town center pedestrian zone, centered around St. Michael's Church and the local bandstand. The layout is wonderfully connected, making it easy to grab a warm drink and wander past the cozy wooden chalets.
The official 2026 Innichen / San Candido Christmas Market dates have been announced! The market will run from November 27, 2026, to January 6, 2027.
The regular opening hours for the market stalls are daily from 10:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. (Note: from late November to mid-December, the market is typically open only Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays before shifting to daily operations.)
Holiday hours do vary, so keep these exceptions in mind:
December 24: 10:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
December 25: Closed

Gerstensuppe (Barley Soup): Perfect for a chilly winter evening, this hearty and warm stew is wonderfully flavorful and filling.
Pressknödel mit Kraut (Pressed Dumplings): A savory staple of the South Tyrolean region, these cheese-laced pressed bread dumplings are fried and served on a bed of warm, tangy sauerkraut.
Gulasch di Manzo (Beef Goulash): A rich, slow-cooked beef stew with paprika that perfectly reflects the town's proximity to the Austrian border.
