Navigating the Language in Ortisei

This area of Italy has a unique linguistic heritage! While most people speak German and Italian, the native language of the Val Gardena valley is actually Ladin, an ancient Rhaeto-Romance language. Many speak English as well, but it’s best to come equipped to say “Hallo,” “Buongiorno,” and “Bun dé” (Ladin for good day!).

You’ll also find that nearly every destination has three names here: one in Italian, one in German, and one in Ladin. Apple Maps and Google Maps tend to list the Italian names; locals often refer to the town by its Ladin or German names; and the street signs display all three. You’ll see that we go back and forth on the names, but we more often refer to the destinations by their Italian names. Ortisei is the Italian version of the city’s name, St. Ulrich is the German version, and Urtijëi is the Ladin version.

How to Get to Ortisei

By Air: If you are coming from Europe, you can easily fly into Innsbruck Airport in Austria, the region's closest gateway. From Innsbruck, you can reach Ortisei by train, bus, or car in under two hours. Verona Villafranca Airport is your next best option in Italy.
If you are flying from another continent, Munich Airport in Germany or Milan Malpensa in Italy will likely be your major international hubs. Both offer strong train connections into the South Tyrol area.

By Train and Bus: Ortisei is located in the beautiful Val Gardena region. To get there by public transit, you'll typically route through the main train stations in Brixen (Bressanone) or Bolzano (Bozen). From either station, you can hop on a regional bus (like route 350) that takes you directly into the village.

By Car: If you’re driving around the Dolomites (we did!), Ortisei is incredibly easy to reach from the main Brenner highway. It’s about a 40-minute drive from Bolzano to Ortisei, and a short 20-minute drive from nearby Kastelruth.

How to Get Around in Ortisei

The village center is incredibly pedestrian-friendly, making walking the absolute best way to experience the Christmas market. In fact, Ortisei boasts one of the most beautiful pedestrian zones in the Dolomites! Once you arrive, the historic town center is easy to navigate. You can easily stroll around the beautifully painted buildings and the main market without needing public transit.

If you want to head up the mountain for skiing or panoramic views, the cable cars to the Seceda and the Seiser Alm (Alpe di Siusi) are easily accessible right from the town center. While you don't need a car to enjoy Ortisei itself, renting one is highly recommended if you plan on exploring the wider Dolomites region on your own schedule.
