Navigating the Language in Klausen

This area of Italy has a unique linguistic heritage! While most people speak German and Italian, the native language in some parts of the surrounding valleys is actually Ladin, an ancient Rhaeto-Romance language. Many speak English as well, but it's best to come equipped to say "Hallo," "Buongiorno," and "Bun dé" (Ladin for good day!).

Apple Maps and Google Maps tend to list the Italian names, but locals and the regional tourism board often refer to the town by its German name, Klausen. You'll see us go back and forth on the names, but we'll mostly use Klausen in this guide! Klausen is the German version of the city's name, Chiusa is the Italian version, and Tluses is the Ladin version.

How to Get to Klausen

By Air: If you are coming from Europe, you can easily fly into Innsbruck Airport in Austria, the region's closest gateway. From Innsbruck, you can reach Klausen by train, bus, or car in under two hours. Verona Villafranca Airport is your next best option in Italy. If you are flying from another continent, Munich Airport in Germany or Milan Malpensa in Italy will likely be your major international hubs. Both offer strong train connections into the South Tyrol area.

By Train and Bus: Klausen is located directly in the beautiful Eisack Valley. To get there by public transit, it's actually much easier than some mountain towns because Klausen has its own train station! You can take a direct train from Bolzano to town in about 22 minutes, or catch a regional bus from the Bolzano South station.

By Car: If you're driving around the Dolomites (we did!), Klausen is incredibly easy to reach from the main Brenner highway. It's only about a 26-minute drive from Bolzano to Klausen, and a quick trip down from nearby Brixen.

How to Get Around in Klausen

The village center is incredibly pedestrian-friendly, making walking the absolute best way to experience the Christmas market. In fact, Ortisei boasts one of the most beautiful pedestrian zones in the Dolomites! Once you arrive, the historic town center is easy to navigate. You can easily stroll around the beautifully painted buildings and the main market without needing public transit.

If you want to head up the mountain for skiing or panoramic views, the cable cars to the Seceda and the Seiser Alm (Alpe di Siusi) are easily accessible right from the town center. While you don't need a car to enjoy Ortisei itself, renting one is highly recommended if you plan on exploring the wider Dolomites region on your own schedule.
