How to Get to Soprabolzano

The best way to reach Soprabolzano is via the Renon Cable Car (Funivia del Renon). From Bolzano’s main train station, it’s just a flat 10-minute walk to the cable car station. The cable car departs every 4 minutes and whisks you up the dramatic mountain slope to Soprabolzano in just 12 minutes! The sweeping views of the Dolomites on the way up are worth the trip alone.

Navigating the Language in Soprabolzano / Oberbozen

One unique thing that’s important to note before we get started is that this area of Italy primarily speaks German! Many also speak Italian and English, but you never really know which language you’ll be greeted with, so it’s best to come equipped to say “Hallo,” “Buongiorno,” and “Hello!”

You’ll also find that nearly every destination has two names: one in Italian and one in German. Apple Maps and Google Maps tended to list the Italian names; locals tended to refer to the town’s German names; and the street signs and local posters displayed both names.

You’ll see that we go back and forth on the names, but we more often refer to the destinations by their Italian names. Soprabolzano is the Italian version of the city’s name and Oberbozen is the German version of the city name. You’ll see both here, but you’ll hear and see Soprabolzano more.

How to Get Around Soprabolzano

The best way to get around the Renon plateau is by using its famous historic narrow-gauge railway, the Trenino del Renon (Rittnerbahn). Once you arrive at the Soprabolzano cable car station, you don't need a car at all! Soprabolzano itself is a very small village with mainly the market to explore and views to take in from the top, so you won’t need to get around any other way than walking while you’re visiting the Soprabolzano Christmas market.

If you want to go beyond Soprabolzano and visit the other markets, take the historic train that serves as your magical sleigh ride connecting them! The train departs from Soprabolzano and takes you through the snow-dusted woods to Wolfsgruben/Costalovara and Klobenstein/Collalbo. Buying a combined transit ticket for the cable car and the historic train is the most cost-effective and scenic way to explore the area.

Soprabolzano Christmas Market Location, Opening Date, & Operating Times

The official 2026 Soprabolzano Christmas Market dates have been announced! The market will run from November 27, 2026, to January 3, 2027. Unlike the larger city markets that are open daily, the Soprabolzano Christmas Market operates primarily on weekends to keep its slow, cozy, and authentic vibe.

The regular opening hours for the market stalls are from Fridays from 2:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. (or 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on select holiday dates) and Saturdays and Sundays from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Holiday hours vary!

Please check the Renon tourism website for the most up-to-date information on dates and hours.

Does the Soprabolzano Christmas Market Have Mugs?

Yes! Like most of the South Tyrolean markets, they offer themed ceramic mugs for your warm drinks. Because this market is themed entirely around the historic railway, the mug designs often feature adorable train motifs. Just like down in Bolzano, the deposit for the mug is usually around €5. You can choose to keep the mug as a wonderful souvenir or return it to the vendor to get your deposit back.

Foods & Drinks to Try in Soprabolzano

  • Canederli (Knödel): You can't visit a South Tyrolean market without diving into these traditional boiled bread dumplings. Usually flavored with speck (smoked ham), cheese, or spinach, they are served hot in a savory broth or rolled in melted butter.

  • Regional Dishes: Look for hearty servings of polenta and goulash!

  • Strauben: A classic alpine funnel cake. The batter is fried into a crisp, golden spiral, heavily dusted with powdered sugar, and traditionally served with a large dollop of sweet mountain cranberry (lingonberry) jam.

  • Vin Brulé (Glühwein): The mulled wine here is comforting on a cold day! Utilizing the region's incredible local red wines, it is simmered with orange slices, cloves, and cinnamon sticks. Sip it hot from a festive, collectible market mug!

  • Apple Strudel (Apfelstrudel): Made using fresh South Tyrolean apples, the thin pastry dough is wrapped tightly around a warm filling of spiced apples, pine nuts, and raisins, usually paired with vanilla sauce.

What Else to Do Around Soprabolzano

If you are heading up to the Renon plateau for the Christmas markets, take advantage of the crisp mountain air and explore the surroundings:

  • Ride the Trenino del Renon: Even if you aren't shopping, taking a ride on this narrow-gauge railway that has been operating since 1907 is a must-do. The vintage wooden carriages offer stunning panoramic views of the Schlern mountain peaks.
