Located in the heart of the city, this world renowned palace houses an impressive fusion of Christian and Moorish architecture. Here's what you need to know before you go while in Seville!
A Little Bit of History of the Royal Alcázar of Seville
Short and sweet history for a little bit of context: the Royal Alcázar is actually the oldest royal palace in continuous use in Europe! Originally developed as a fort for the Cordoban governors in 913, the complex we see today was largely shaped by King Pedro I in the 14th century.
It features an incredible blend of classic Moorish and Gothic styles, resulting in a breathtaking Mudéjar masterpiece. Over time, that original fort grew into one of Spain's most important landmarks, attracting visitors from all over the globe, and was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987.
What to Expect at the Royal Alcázar
The Royal Alcázar is home to a vast collection of intricate tilework, stunning courtyards, and some of the most beautiful gardens you will ever see. What we loved most was how it felt more like a place to truly discover rather than a standard museum where you just stare at art piece after art piece. Every single space felt so unique instead of blending into one long run on exhibit. There were interesting little corners everywhere we turned.
The palace's most famous areas include the Patio de las Doncellas (Courtyard of the Maidens) and the Baths of Doña María de Padilla. Exploring those underground tunnels honestly felt like discovering hidden secrets! It also made for fantastic photo ops at every turn.
Some historical palaces can be stuffy, but the Alcázar? Not even close. It's elegant, sure, because it is a royal palace and it feels like it! But it is also lush and vibrant. We spent so much time just taking our time in the expansive outdoor gardens, soaking in the sun, and admiring the beautiful peacocks roaming the grounds.
You can wander around and take it all in without feeling rushed, crammed amongst throngs of tourists, or having to whisper. Whether you are an architecture buff or a casual visitor, you are sure to find something to appreciate at the Royal Alcázar.
Planning Your Visit to the Royal Palace
It's located right in the heart of Seville, super close to the Seville Cathedral and the Giralda tower. The lines can get pretty wild, so you absolutely need to book ahead!
We bought Skip the Line entry tickets through Get Your Guide, which made the whole process quick and easy. You just enter the online ticket line at the Puerta del León (Lion's Gate) and show your passport. (Yes, you absolutely need to bring your passport with you to this one!) Give yourself at least two or three hours there, because trust us, you'll want it. Go early or late to avoid the biggest crowds. You can book the skip-the-line tickets here!
As for what to wear? Comfy shoes are a must! You'll be doing a lot of walking. There's no dress code, so just wear whatever you feel good in. Visiting in January meant we enjoyed pleasantly mild weather while exploring all the outdoor garden paths! Just keep in mind that large bags aren't allowed inside.

Since you're in the heart of Seville, there's a ton to do nearby. Check out the spectacular Seville Cathedral, wander through the historic Barrio Santa Cruz (beautiful!), or maybe even catch an authentic flamenco show. And don't forget to grab some delicious Andalusian tapas before or after your visit! There are tons of great restaurants and cafes nearby.
