Arriving Before Rope Drop

If you want to get the most out of your Magic Kingdom day, you’ll want to arrive early. The park typically opens at 9 a.m., with early entry opening to Disney resort hotel guests at 8:30 a.m. And we know it’s early, but we recommend arriving at least 30 minutes before the early entry opening (meaning 8 a.m.) to take advantage of rope drop.

To make it to the parks by at least 8:00 a.m. before the early entry rope drop, you’ll need to catch the first bus, boat, or monorail from your Walt Disney World Resort hotel to the Magic Kingdom. Plan to arrive at your resort’s transportation stop by 7:30 a.m. I know, I know! It’s so early, but the ride from most resorts to Magic Kingdom typically takes at least 15-20 minutes, so you’ll need the extra time in the morning to arrive before everyone else.

Morning in Magic Kingdom

Start off the day in a magical way in Fantasyland! Really? Are we going to start an adults-only day in Magic Kingdom with the most kiddie rides? Yep! For a few good reasons.

Fantasyland and Tomorrowland are the only lands that open at the earliest early-entry rope drop for Disney resort guests. Fantasyland gets crazy crowded and boiling hot in the middle of the day since there’s no shade in this area. Going early means you’ll also avoid getting stuck behind seas of strollers and swarms of large families and the long wait times that come with them! And most importantly, Fantasyland’s rides are very close together. You can cover a lot of rides in a very short amount of time here!

Picking which rides to do first is up to you. We see two main choices here that work! You can enter the park at rope drop and make a beeline for Seven Dwarfs Mine Train to avoid paying for the Single Pass Lightning Lane. Because this small coaster is very popular, this will be the only ride you’ll get to do before the general public rope drop. Alternatively, you can head straight for Fantasyland and knock out either The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh or Peter Pan’s Flight and then Small World, all before the park opens to the general public rope drop! The lines will be the shortest they’ll be all day.

Leave the Voyage of the Little Mermaid, Mickey's PhilharMagic Concert, Prince Charming Regal Carrousel, and Mad Tea Party for later in the day or in the evening. The lines for these are often pretty short later in the day.

After hitting the must-dos in Fantasyland, head over to Adventureland now that the park is open to all. Hop in the short line for the Pirates of the Caribbean, a classic Disney attraction loved by fans of all ages. Riding it early in the day will help you avoid longer queues later on, and it's right beside the Jungle Cruise, which, if you scored a good Lightning Lane time, should be next! As long as you like dad jokes, this beloved ride will have you chuckling as you journey through "exotic landscapes" with witty skippers. Don't forget to get a new Lightning Lane for Space Mountain as soon as you scan into Jungle Cruise!

After nearly a year-long closure for updates and refurbishment, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is finally reopened! It’s one of Magic Kingdom's most exhilarating attractions. You’ll absolutely need to prioritize this ride in your Lightning Lane Multi-pass selection since it’s a big fan favorite once again! Head to Frontierland next to ride the wildest ride in the wilderness!

Afternoon in Magic Kingdom

Refuel with lunch at Columbia Harbor House, a charming quick-service restaurant known for its delicious seafood, salads, and sandwiches. We recommend ordering ahead on the My Disney Experience app, picking up your order (the shrimp skewers and the lobster roll are our favorites!), and finding a nice window upstairs to people-watch and enjoy lunch in air-conditioned peace. Not enough people even know there's an upstairs portion, so it's much calmer up there! Gluten-free? This is one of our favorite places for gluten-free meals in Magic Kingdom. For more gluten-free options, here are the best gluten-free foods we’ve tried in Disney World!

Time for Tomorrowland! Use your Lightning Lane reservation to bypass the line and embark on an exhilarating space voyage aboard Space Mountain. Feel the rush as you zoom through the darkness of the cosmos on this iconic roller coaster. Afterward, if the wait time is short, go to the Carousel of Progress for a nostalgic journey through the history of technological advancements.

For a relaxing and scenic tour of Tomorrowland, hop on the People Mover. Enjoy the breezy ride and take in the panoramic views of the park. If the wait time exceeds 20 minutes, go later, when it's less crowded. And if time allows or if you can get another Lightning Lane for it before your dinner reservations, get competitive with a round of the newly improved Buzz Lightyear's Space Ranger Spin

Evening in Magic Kingdom

Head back to Adventureland for dinner reservations at Jungle Navigation Co. LTD Skipper Canteen. This Jungle Cruise-themed restaurant features flavors from Africa, Asia, and Latin America, and all of the great puns and dad jokes of the ride. The lamb chops and the fish were our favorite dishes! If you somehow don't like adventure and corny jokes, you can always make reservations for a tasty Thanksgiving dinner at Liberty Tree Tavern.

Once the sun has set, it’s time to trek back over to Tomorrowland for one more ride that’s absolutely a must-do in the dark: Tron Lightcycle Run! Make sure your Lightning Lane Single Pass is set for some time at least in sunset and beyond. The high-speed thrills of this futuristic coaster is quick, fun, and way cooler when the park is darker!

Meander back towards Main Street U.S.A to stake out the prime viewing spot about 30 minutes before the spectacular fireworks show called Happily Ever After. If you don’t want to wait with the crowds for the fireworks show, hop onto the People Mover while you’re in Tomorrowland after riding Tron and watch the fireworks from there! While there are some indoor parts to the experience, much of the ride takes place outdoors, with fantastic views of the castle and fireworks! You can even hear the soundtrack from the show as you ride.

After the fireworks, walk to the back of Liberty Square to use your Lightning Lane reservation to bypass the line for Haunted Mansion, crawl into your doom buggy, and make your way through this must-do ride. Take a spine-tingling tour of this classic attraction and marvel at the eerie illusions and 99 happy haunts. Why ride at night? The darkness adds so much to the ride's spookiness!

Cap off the night with a visit to Beak and Barrel! With mocktails, cocktails, and light bites, this well-themed pirate bar just outside of Pirates of the Caribbean is well worth a coveted evening reservation! If you’d rather have a midday break, you can try to get a reservation for midday after your quick-service lunch.

Additional Options (If Time Allows)

You never know the crowd sizes at Disney! Sometimes the crowds move quickly, and other times they are painfully slow. But there’s one thing for sure – you’ll be shocked by how much you can get done as a pair in Disney without kids, strollers, or large parties slowing you down.

If you have extra time, we recommend watching a parade from the second floor of the Main Street U.S.A Walt Disney Railroad station, catching a show at the Enchanted Tiki Room or The Country Bear Musical Jamboree, enjoying a brunch at Be Our Guest instead of a quick-service lunch, visit the Hall of Presidents for an animatronic history lesson, shop along Main Street  U.S.A, or have a laugh in Tomorrowland at Monsters, Inc. Laugh Floor
