How to Get to Lausanne for the Christmas Markets
By Air: If you're coming from Europe, you can easily fly into Geneva Airport (GVA). This is the closest and most convenient airport for this region. From the airport, you can quickly reach Lausanne by train. Direct trains take you straight to Lausanne's central station (Gare de Lausanne) in approximately 45-50 minutes. This is the quickest and most cost-effective option.
If you're coming from another continent, Zurich Airport (ZRH) will likely be your other major international hub. Zurich Airport offers a wider range of international flights. The high-speed Swiss trains connect Zurich Airport to Lausanne in approximately 2.5 hours. There are frequent connections, making it a comfortable and efficient option.
By Train: Gare de Lausanne is a major railway hub in Switzerland, making it easily accessible from various cities. In less than an hour, you can reach Lausanne from Geneva. Trains from Bern take about 1 hour, while connections from Zurich take roughly 2 hours and 15 minutes. Paris to Lausanne via the TGV Lyria high-speed train takes about 3 hours and 40 minutes. (This is what we did! It was a nice and comfy morning train ride!) Book train tickets in advance, especially during the Christmas market season, to get the best rates!
How to Get Around Lausanne
Stay in or near the city center and be prepared for a hike of a walk! Walking is a great way to see the city, though keep in mind that Lausanne is built on steep hills. If you'd like to give your legs a break or go a little further, the city's excellent metro system is constantly running nearby. The m2 metro line is particularly helpful for navigating the steep climb from the lakeside up to the Old Town.
Getting to the markets from the train station will require quite the vertical hike. A few Swiss travelers joked on our trek up that it was “mount Lausanne.” If you have weaker hips, knees, or ankles, we would highly recommend walking poles. We saw many of these here (pictured above) so you’d be in good company. This city is very hilly!
Lausanne's main train station is easy to access and connects to many other major stations in nearby towns. Being so close to Montreux, Vevey, Villeneuve, and Geneva, Lausanne is the perfect launching pad for more European Christmas market adventures.

Lausanne's Bô Noël festival spreads across several central squares, each offering a unique and immersive experience. These market hubs are all conveniently connected within the city center, allowing you to easily map out a festive walking route.
Place Saint-François: The iconic heart of the traditional market, where covered market chalets cluster around the historic church.
Place de l'Europe: A lively hub featuring a contemporary twist, highlighted by the massive, cozy Igloo du Terroir Vaudois.
Place Pépinet: The dedicated Creators' Market, showcasing local fashion, jewelry, and unique design-oriented stalls.
Flon District: A modern, trendy area that features family-friendly spaces and a popular ice-skating rink.
Esplanade de la Cathédrale: Perched high up with incredible panoramic winter views over the city rooftops and Lake Geneva, offering an intimate festive atmosphere.

Lausanne Christmas Markets Opening Dates & Times
The official 2026 Lausanne Christmas Market dates have not been released yet, but from looking at data from previous years, they are expected to run from November 19 to December 31, 2026. The markets are scheduled to be open from 10:30 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. daily, though individual food chalets and specific animation spaces may extend slightly later into the evening.
Weekends and evenings do get a little more crowded than weekdays, but the crowds are nothing compared to other larger and more popular destinations. It’s better to visit Lausanne on a weekend than Geneva! Please refer to Visit Lausanne, the Lausanne tourism board, for official information regarding opening dates and times.

Foods & Drinks to Try in Lausanne
Swiss Fondue: You can't visit a Swiss market without diving into a big pot of melted cheese. Head to the Igloo du Terroir Vaudois for an authentic half-and-half (moitié-moitié) or porcini mushroom fondue.
Vaudois Wines: Move over beer, local wine pairs perfectly with heavy cheese. Sample local crisp white Chasselas wines produced right in the nearby canton of Vaud.
Raclette: Another melted cheese staple. Watch them scrape a wheel of piping-hot, gooey cheese directly onto a plate of potatoes, cornichons, and pickled onions.
Glühwein/Vin Chaud: The mulled wine here is comforting on a cold day! Sip it from a festive, collectible market mug!
Artisanal Chocolates: Switzerland is world-renowned for its high-quality chocolate. Look for local chocolatiers serving rich, velvety hot chocolate or selling handcrafted pralines.
