2026 Montreux Christmas Markets Guide

While there are countless European Christmas markets to visit, there is nothing quite like the scenic Montreux Riviera Noël in Switzerland. We had this market on our must-visit list for a long time because of the famous flying Santa, but the actual scale and beauty of the event truly blew us away. Out of the forty Christmas markets we have visited so far, Montreux solidifies its spot in our top ten! It manages to feel like a holiday paradise tucked between the palm trees of the lakeside and the snow capped peaks of the Alps. You can check out our complete 2026 guide below for opening dates, our favorite finds, and the practical tips you need to navigate this unique Swiss destination.

How to Get to Montreux

If you are traveling from another continent or a distant European city, flying into Geneva Airport (GVA) is your best bet. The airport has its own train station directly inside the terminal, which is incredibly convenient. From there, you can catch a direct train that brings you to the center of Montreux in about an hour and fifteen minutes. The train ride itself is a highlight as it follows the curve of Lake Geneva, providing stunning views of the vineyards and water before you even arrive.

For those already in Switzerland or nearby countries like France and Italy, the train is the most efficient way to reach the city. Montreux is a major stop on the rail lines between Geneva and Brig. You can reach the city from Lausanne in just twenty minutes or from Zurich in about two and a half hours. We always suggest booking your tickets early to get the best rates, especially during the peak of December when travel demand is high.

How to Get Around Montreux

Once you are in the city, walking is an easy way to see everything. The market stalls stretch along the lakeside promenade, which is just a short walk down the hill from the main train station. Because the layout is set right along the water, the market essentially snakes in a single long line. While this makes it easy to follow, it can lead to some traffic jams during busier hours.

If you want to head to attractions that are slightly further away, the local transport system is excellent. The buses and local trains run frequently and can take you toward Chillon Castle or up into the hills for a different perspective of the lake. Many local hotels offer guests a Montreux Riviera Card, which gives you free access to local public transport and discounts on several regional attractions.

Montreux Christmas Market Location

The Montreux Christmas Market is primarily centered on the Lakeside Promenade, where more than 170 illuminated wooden chalets are set up. This area is the heart of the festive action and where you will find the most shopping and food. Another key spot is the Marché Couvert, or Covered Market, which provides a bit of shelter and hosts several large food and drink areas.

Because of their proximity to France, this area speaks mostly French! Still, as a tourist, you’ll get a long speaking English just fine. But just remember your pleasantries and manners if you can start with “hello” or “please” in French! A little courteous effort goes a long way.

Montreux Christmas Markets Opening Dates & Times

The 2026 Montreux Christmas Market is scheduled to be open from November 19 to December 23, 2026. Generally, the market stalls open around 11:00 am each day. From Monday to Thursday, they typically stay open until 8:00 pm or 9:00 pm. On Fridays and Saturdays, you can enjoy the festivities a bit later, as many stalls remain open until 10:00 pm.

On Christmas Eve, the markets usually close early, around 4:00 pm or 5:00 pm, to allow the vendors to celebrate the holiday with their families. We found that early afternoon hours are the best times to visit if you want to browse the stalls more comfortably before the evening crowds arrive to see the lights, but do stick around for the first time Santa soars across the sky to catch an iconic sight with an unforgettable sunset in a beautiful setting!

Crowds at Montreux's Christmas Markets

Montreux is one of the most famous Christmas markets in Switzerland, so it naturally attracts a crowd. When we visited on a Monday afternoon, it was crowded but still manageable. However, we would be cautious about visiting on weekend evenings when the crowds can become quite intense. Because of the long, narrow layout along the lake, the flow of people can feel a bit restricted at times.

The biggest draw for the crowds is the Flying Santa show. He flies over the lake in his sleigh every day at 5:00 pm, 6:00 pm, and 7:00 pm, with an additional flight at 4:00 pm on Saturdays. One thing that surprised us is that he does not just fly across…he actually stops to sing and play the guitar for a bit! He moves very fast during the flight portions, so make sure you are ready with your camera a few minutes before the hour.

Foods & Drinks to Try in Montreux

One of the things that set Montreux apart is the amount of thoughtfully planned spaces to sit and relax. Unlike many other markets where you have to eat while standing or walking, Montreux has several dedicated chill zones, patios, and even heated bubbles. It is rare to find so many cozy areas built specifically for relaxing, which means you can stay at the market all day long without getting worn out, and that there’s actually places to eat and linger and even sit down as you eat a meal or snack!

We highly recommend looking for the gingerbread booth that sells mini gingerbread cookies. They are the perfect snack to munch on as you wander (and even served as the perfect airplane snack later!) Of course, you should also try traditional Swiss staples like raclette or fondue at one of the larger chalets. And for the drinks, a hot cup of Vin Chaud (mulled wine) or chocolat chaud (hot chocolate) is a must!

What to Buy at the Montreux Christmas Markets

The shopping in Montreux offers a great mix of traditional crafts and unique gifts. You will find plenty of handmade wooden ornaments, intricate paper cuttings, and local Swiss textiles. The quality of the goods here felt very high, and there was a nice variety of items that we had not seen at some of the other European markets. Now, do note that the prices are, well, very Swiss. You’ll pay a pretty penny for any find!

If you are looking for something edible to take home, local honey, Swiss chocolates, and regional spices are widely available. The artisanal soaps and handcrafted jewelry stalls also offered some beautiful, high quality options. We appreciated that the market felt like a good balance between traditional holiday decor and practical, well made gifts.

In Switzerland, they use the CHF, aka the Swiss Franc, not the Euro. Don’t worry about taking out cash here! Every stall and vendor at the Montreux Christmas market took card payments. Just be mindful that the currency conversion rate is different than the Euro!

What Else to See in Montreux

If you want a break from the market stalls, there are plenty of other things to do in the area. We recommend taking a short trip to see Chillon Castle, which is a stunning medieval fortress on the water. During the holidays, they often have their own medieval themed market events on the weekends.

A fan of the band Queen? So are we! Queen fans must visit the Freddie Mercury statue on the promenade, which captures the singer in his iconic 1986 Wembley pose. Mercury fell in love with the peace of Montreux, famously saying, "If you want peace of mind, come to Montreux". He recorded six albums with Queen at Mountain Studios, including their final album, Made in Heaven. You can visit the former studio for free at Queen: The Studio Experience, located inside the Casino Barrière, where you can see original instruments and handwritten lyrics. His statue also stands in the middle of the Montreux Christmas market.

For a truly unique experience, you can take a cogwheel train from the Montreux station up to Rochers-de-Naye. At over 2,000 meters in altitude, you can visit Santa Claus in his mountain house.

Where to Stay in Montreux

If you want to be right in the center of the action, staying at the Fairmont Le Montreux Palace or the Grand Hotel Suisse Majestic is your best bet. Both are luxury options that put you within steps of the Christmas market and offer incredible views of Lake Geneva.

For something a bit more modern, the Mona Montreux is a mid-range, highly rated hotel that is conveniently located for exploring the promenade.

If you are looking for a more budget friendly stay, there are several three star hotels like La Villa or Hôtel de la Rouvenaz that are situated close to the market area.
