How to Get to Bruges for the Christmas Markets

By Air: The closest and most convenient major international hub is Brussels Airport (BRU). From the airport, you can take a direct train that reaches Bruges in approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes. There are typically over 50 trains per day, making this a very efficient option.

By Train: Bruges is easily accessible by rail from several major European cities.

  • From London: Take the Eurostar to Brussels-Midi, then transfer to a local Belgian SNCB train to reach Bruges.

  • From Paris: High-speed trains connect to Brussels in about 1 hour and 20 minutes, with frequent local connections to Bruges taking another hour.

  • From Amsterdam: You can take the Eurostar to Antwerp and switch to a local train for the final leg to Bruges.

How to Get Around Bruges

Stay in or near the city center and walk! Walking is the best way to navigate the compact, cobblestone streets, especially when the city is decorated for the holidays. Most of the festive highlights are located within the historic Old Town, which is largely pedestrianized during the market season.

If you’re doing a day trip to Bruges from Belgium, the Christmas markets can be reached in about 10 minutes by walking from the central train station. Take your time and enjoy the walk as Bruges is a very cute city to explore!

Bruges Christmas Market Locations

Market Square (Grote Markt): This is the main hub of the festivities, set against the backdrop of the iconic Belfry tower. You will find traditional wooden chalets selling decorations, gifts, and plenty of festive food.

Simon Stevinplein: Located just a short walk from the main square, this market focuses more on local crafts and regional delicacies. It is often a bit more intimate than the Grote Markt.

Crowds at Bruges' Christmas Markets

Bruges is a very popular destination, and the markets can get incredibly crowded, particularly on weekend evenings. We visited on a rainy weekend and found the squares packed with large groups of tourists. To have a more relaxed experience, we highly recommend visiting during the week or earlier in the day when the crowds are manageable.

What Else to See in Bruges

  • Winter Glow: This is the city's signature winter festival. It includes a Light Experience Trail, which is a three-kilometer walking route featuring various light installations across the historic center.

  • The Belfry of Bruges: Climb the 366 steps for a panoramic view of the Christmas market in the square below.

  • Lake of Love (Minnewater): This area hosts a floating artificial ice rink and a cozy winter bar with views of the park.
