How to Get to Brixen for the Christmas Markets

By Air: If you're coming from Europe, the nearest convenient international airports are Innsbruck Airport (INN) in Austria, which is about an hour away, and Verona Villafranca Airport (VRN) in Italy, located further south. You can easily hire a rental car or catch a train or shuttle from either of these hubs to get straight into the heart of the Dolomites. If you're coming from another continent, Milan Malpensa (MXP), Munich Airport (MUC), and Venice Marco Polo (VCE) also serve as excellent international gateways with reliable train connections to the region.

By Train: Brixen / Bressanone has its own dedicated train station that sits right on the major Bologna to Brennero railway line. If you are coming from Innsbruck, the train ride is breathtaking and takes just under an hour and a half. Regional trains from Bolzano or Verona make it incredibly simple to hop between the different Northern Italian markets. Be sure to book your train tickets early to secure the best times during the busy holiday season!

Navigating the Language in Brixen / Bressanone

One unique thing that’s important to note before we get started is that this area of Italy primarily speaks German! Many also speak Italian and English, but you never really know which language you’ll be greeted with, so it’s best to come equipped to say “Hallo,” “Buongiorno,” and “Hello!”

The town is known as Brixen in German and Bressanone in Italian. You will see both names on street signs, railway stations, and local maps. It is always a great idea to come prepared with a friendly “Hallo” or “Buongiorno” when approaching the market stalls. We will use both names interchangeably here, but as we saw “Brixen” more than “Bressanone”, we’ll mostly refer to it as Brixen in this blog. But both refer to the exact same magical destination!

How to Get Around Brixen

Brixen is remarkably pedestrian friendly, and staying near the historic old town is the best way to maximize your time. The main Christmas market is located in Cathedral Square (Piazza Duomo), which is just a short, flat walk from the train station. You don’t need a car if you plan to stay within the town center and explore the wooden chalets.

If you want to venture out to the nearby Plose ski area or explore more remote towns in the Dolomites, there is an excellent local bus network. However, renting a car gives you the ultimate freedom to explore the Eisack Valley at your own pace without worrying about public transit schedules. Being so close to Merano, Bolzano, Brunico, and Vipiteno, Brixen is a great area to stay in for more adventures exploring the Northern Italian Christmas markets.

Brixen / Bressanone Christmas Market Location and Opening Dates

The Brixen Christmas Market can be found in Piazza Duomo. Set against the magnificent backdrop of the Brixen Cathedral, the Church of St. Michael, and the Town Hall, this square is filled with charmingly decorated wooden stalls.

The official 2026 Brixen Christmas Market dates are set! Celebrating its 35th anniversary under the theme of hope, the market will run from November 26, 2026, to January 6, 2027.

This market is proudly certified as a Green Event, focusing on regional authenticity and sustainability. Hours generally run from mid morning into the early evening, with extended times on weekends.

Please check the Brixen tourism website for the most up-to-date information on dates and hours.

Weekends and evenings do get a little more crowded than weekdays, but the atmosphere remains open, light, and fun.

Does the Brixen Christmas Market Have Mugs?

Yes! Collecting Christmas market mugs is one of our favorite traditions, and Brixen does not disappoint. When you order a hot drink like mulled wine, you will pay a small deposit for the ceramic mug. You can choose to keep the mug as a wonderful souvenir of your trip, or you can return it to the vendor to get your deposit back. The designs are updated frequently, and given that 2026 is their 35th anniversary, you can expect a special mug design this year!

Foods & Drinks to Try in Brixen

  • Canederli (Knödel): You can't visit a South Tyrolean market without diving into these traditional boiled bread dumplings. Usually flavored with speck (smoked ham), cheese, or spinach, they are served hot in a savory broth or rolled in melted butter.

  • Eisack Valley Specialties: Look out for local cured meats, artisan cheeses, and freshly baked goods unique to this specific valley in the Dolomites.

  • Strauben: A classic alpine funnel cake. The batter is fried into a crisp, golden spiral, heavily dusted with powdered sugar, and traditionally served with a large dollop of sweet mountain cranberry (lingonberry) jam.

  • Vin Brulé (Glühwein): The mulled wine here is comforting on a cold day! Utilizing the region's incredible local red wines, it is simmered with orange slices, cloves, and cinnamon sticks. Sip it hot from a festive, collectible market mug!

  • Apple Strudel (Apfelstrudel): Made using fresh South Tyrolean apples, the thin pastry dough is wrapped tightly around a warm filling of spiced apples, pine nuts, and raisins, usually paired with vanilla sauce.
