How to Take the Perfect Day Trip to Monaco
Where's a must-go destination for 2026? Monaco! We could rave about the French Riviera forever, but a one-day trip from Nice is simply a must in our book! Monaco is a tiny country that's smack dab in the heart of the French Riviera, yet it's entirely its own destination. If you're an affordable luxury or ballin' on a budget traveler like us, you're probably thinking, "Monaco? Isn't that just for the super-rich?" And while it's true, there's definitely a touch of that fame and fortune; you don't have to be a millionaire to enjoy it for the day. Trust us, it's totally doable on a day trip. Here's your guide to a day trip to Monaco from Nice, France!
This tiny principality sandwiched between the Mediterranean Sea and the French Alps offers a unique blend of glitz, glamour, and history. Don't let the image of overflowing wealth deter you – Monaco is surprisingly accessible and provides a captivating glimpse into a world of luxury. Where else can you see a Formula 1 race track, a royal palace, and a world-famous casino all in one place?
How to Get There
Going from Nice to Monaco is really easy. Frequent trains depart from Nice Ville station (pictured on the left above), offering a scenic journey along the coast, passing beautiful beaches and destinations that make for excellent day trips like Villefranche-sur-Mer, Èze, and Cap d'Ail. The ride takes about 20 minutes. Trains between these popular locations can get crowded during the peak summer season, so make sure you plan to arrive a little bit earlier than the listed time. You can buy tickets from the station, but we always keep it easy and digital and buy ours from the Trainline app!
Navigating the Monaco Train Station
Once you arrive at Monaco-Monte Carlo station (shown in the video above), you're ready to explore…as soon as you leave the station. Getting around is a bit confusing, but knowing you're several stories underground, getting out and about in the city and out of the station will make much more sense. Quick tip - Sortie is french for Exit! (Yes, they speak French in Monaco.) Follow the crowd, up, up, and up again until you see the sunshine, then congrats! Welcome to Monaco!
How to Get Around Monaco
Monaco is surprisingly compact. You can easily walk most of Monaco in a day!
Walk: That's how we got around - from the train station to the Casino de Monte-Carlo, Monaco-Ville, and back! We walked many miles and up countless steps during the day, but it was always worth it for the stellar views and photo ops.
Bus: Monaco has an excellent public bus system (CAM) with six lines that cover most of the principality. Buses are frequent and affordable, making them a convenient way to reach different areas. We recommend having a few euros on hand to pay for a bus ride, should you want to purchase a ticket from the bus driver. If you know in advance that you'd rather take the bus than walk, you can find ticket vending machines at many bus stops or the CAM app, which allows you to purchase tickets digitally and then show them to the driver on your smartphone.
Taxi: Taxis are readily available throughout Monaco. They are a convenient option, especially if you have luggage or are traveling with a group. Most should take a credit card, but having cash on hand for taxis is always wise.
Driving: While driving is technically an option, it's generally not recommended due to the limited parking, winding roads, and heavy traffic.
What to Do in Monaco
Meander through Monte Carlo
Monte Carlo is the glamorous heart of Monaco. The Casino de Monte-Carlo is a masterpiece of Belle Époque architecture. Even if you don't gamble, it's worth stepping inside to admire the opulent interior. Pro tip: if you want to enter the casino floor, you must have your passport on you! You don't need to show it at the front door - just to gamble on the casino floor.
Just across the street from the casino, you'll find the luxurious Hôtel de Paris. This legendary landmark has hosted royalty and celebrities for over 150 years. Enjoy a leisurely coffee or a decadent afternoon tea at the hotel's renowned Café de Paris. People-watching is a must here, as you'll likely spot some seriously impressive cars and their equally impressive drivers.
Explore Monaco-Ville (Old Town)
After soaking up the ritzy Monte Carlo atmosphere, head to the royal side of Monaco - Monaco-Ville. This is the historic Old Town perched on a rocky headland. Wander through the narrow, cobbled streets, admire the colorful houses, and soak in the medieval charm. Don't miss the Prince's Palace, the official residence of the Grimaldi family, who have ruled Monaco for centuries. You can even witness the changing of the guard ceremony if you time your visit right.
For lunch, indulge in a delicious meal with a view. Several restaurants in Monaco-Ville offer stunning panoramas of the harbor and the Mediterranean Sea. Alternatively, grab a quick and tasty bite at one of the many cafes and bistros.
See the Grand Prix Circuit
After lunch, stroll along the famous Formula 1 Grand Prix circuit to see where famous racers compete in one of the most epic courses. You can walk here from the old town. Even if you're not a racing enthusiast, it's fascinating to see the track up close and imagine the speed and excitement of the race.
Take a Break on the Coast
No visit to Monaco is complete without a leisurely stroll along the harbor. Marvel at the impressive yachts, soak up the vibrant atmosphere and enjoy the stunning coastal scenery. For a truly unforgettable experience, treat yourself to a cocktail at one of the many stylish bars with harbor views. Sip your drink while watching the sunset and reflecting on your incredible day in Monaco. Go yacht peeping and spend some time strolling along the harbor and soaking up the atmosphere before returning to the train station to head back to Nice.
Tips for Your Monaco Day Trip
Pack Comfortable Shoes
You'll be doing a lot of walking! Though sleek sandals and high heels look great for pics, you'll need something more practical to walk the length of a country for a day!
Bring Water, Sunscreen, Sunglasses, and a Hat
The Mediterranean sun can be intense and unforgiving. There's little shade in most of Monaco, so the beating sun can be brutal. We may or may not have had what we now consider "life-saving popsicles and bottled water" outside the palace when we nearly overheated in the midday sun after walking from one side of the country to the other.
Don't Stress About What to Wear
You'll see people in everything from flip-flops to designer dresses. The ultra-rich aren't concerned that you're in your finest Zara matching set. Whether you're embracing your inner Grace Kelly, vying to fit in with other European tourists, or simply wearing your most practical vacation-mode clothes, dress however you feel most comfortable!
Embrace the local culture
When in Rome (or Monaco), you have to try some local specialties! Go-to Monégasque (something or someone originating from Monaco) dishes are socca (chickpea flour pancakes) or barbagiuan (savory pastries).
Don't be afraid to splurge!
Though you don't have to go crazy, you will naturally spend more money in Monaco than in most other parts of France. Monaco is fancy and full of the rich and famous, and local prices reflect this clientele! If there is any destination on your vacation where you'll treat yourself to a luxurious experience, whether it's a gourmet meal, a cocktail at a chic bar, or a ride on a sightseeing boat, let it be in Monaco! Not many people get to tell stories that include, "Remember that one time in Monaco?"
