Cologne Christmas Market Locations
When you stroll through Cologne for Christmas, you’ll find that each of the markets you encounter is a new world unto itself, themed with such creativity and care that you can't help but feel like you've stepped into a storybook. From majestic cathedrals illuminated by thousands of lights to whimsical displays of gnomes and angels, the attention to detail is astounding. It's as if each market has its own personality.
Cologne is home to roughly six or seven markets, depending on the year. While they each serve a little bit of everything, there is a clear theme to each market. The Dom Market is cathedral-themed, the Heinzels Wintermaerchen is gnome-themed, Markt der Engel is angel-themed, the Hafen Weihnachtsmarkt is harbor-themed, Nikolausdorf is Saint Nicholas/Santa-themed (focuses on entertainment for kids), and Stadtgarten is a very local, foodie haven.
The best part? They’re all within easy walking distance of each other and make for a perfect day of marathoning through stalls, eating, sipping, and shopping your way through the city.
Cologne’s Must Visit Markets:
Dom Market:
Location: Roncalliplatz // 50667 Köln, Germany
Beneath the towering spires of the Cologne Cathedral, the Dom Market sparkles in a way that's both grand and charming. It's not just cathedral-themed; it feels like an extension of the grandeur and beauty of the cathedral itself. Vendors sell everything from handcrafted decorations to warm, hearty treats. The setting is absolutely mesmerizing….but the crowds are bewildering. You’ve been warned. It’s worth it, but you’ve been warned.
Heinzels Wintermaerchen, aka the Gnome Market:
Location: Alter Markt and Heumarkt // Alter Markt 18, 50667 Köln, Germany
This market dips you into an adorable world where gnomes frolic among us, spreading joy and crafting toys. Legend has it that the Heinzels (Gnomes) are Cologne's original inhabitants, bringing a touch of whimsy and magic to this market. Each stall is a treasure trove of handmade gifts and some of the best food of all the Cologne Christmas Markets, all surrounded by adorable gnome motifs and playful decorations.
With an ice skating rink, curling rink, a gondola booth, and a stellar theme, it's absolutely one of the best markets in Cologne. Just do not play a drinking game where you take a chug of gluhwein every time you see a gnome - there are so many you surely won't remember the rest of the market!
Markt der Engel, aka the Angel Market:
Location: Neumarkt // 50667 Köln, Germany
Though smaller and more intimate than the Dom Market, the Angel Market is one of the loveliest of the Cologne Christmas Markets, softly illuminated with twinkling lights and hues of blue and white with ethereal music and motifs. The vendors here offer goods that lean on the delicate, dainty, and occasionally more religious side, along with artisan crafts and heavenly-scented candles. While you’re here, make sure to check out the nativity! And for a dose of something a little different, order a hot aperol spritz!
Hafen Weihnachtsmarkt, aka the Harbor Market:
Location: At the Chocolate Museum - Imhoff-Schokoladenmuseum // Am Schokoladenmuseum 1A, 50678 Köln, Germany
Set against the backdrop of the Rhine, the Hafen Weihnachtsmarkt captures the spirit of Cologne's harbor. Here, maritime charm meets the Christmas spirit. Think nautical-themed decorations, seafood delicacies, and even some stalls shaped like ships!
This market offers a unique twist on the traditional Christmas market experience, blending the city's rich history with holiday traditions. For those brave enough to get the view, this market also has a giant Ferris wheel that offers incredible views of the city and the famous river.
Nikolausdorf:
Location: Rudolphplatz // 50674 Köln, Germany
Named after Saint Nicholas, this market is best for families with young children and those who cherish the pure joy and excitement of the season. With crafts and entertainment specifically designed for kids, including puppet shows, story-telling sessions, and even visits from Saint Nicholas himself, it's a place where childhood dreams of Christmas come to life. The air is filled with laughter, music, and the scent of sweet treats, making it a heartwarming experience for families.
Stadtgarten:
Location: Stadtgarten park // Venloer Str., 50672 Köln, Germany
A hidden gem among Cologne's Christmas markets, Stadtgarten is a foodie's paradise tucked away in a picturesque park. Local vendors take pride in offering gourmet delicacies, artisanal cheeses, and handcrafted brews. It’s a little bit out of the way, but this market feels like a cozy gathering of friends sharing the best of Cologne's local flavors.

Visiting on a weekday will have far less crowded than on the weekends. How to Get Around Cologne’s Markets
One of the best parts about the Cologne Christmas Markets is their proximity to each other. Despite having over a half-dozen markets, each with its own distinct charm, they are all within a reasonable walking distance from one another.
Even better yet, Cologne offers a Christmas tram, a cozy and festive alternative for those who prefer not to walk in the chilly winter air. Riding from one market to the next, wrapped up in warm layers while the city lights dance by, is an experience in itself, making the journey just as delightful as the destination. The seasonal Christmas Market tram will take you around the city from market to market for only 10 euros for the day.
The best way to get to Cologne from other cities is by train or car. If you'd like to rent a car, remember that you will only use it for a little while in the city. The central train station in Cologne is about a 5-15 minute ride share from just about everywhere locally.

Food and Drinks to Try at the Markets
Ofenfuisches – This hot, delicious sandwich which consists of käse & schinken (cheese & ham) inside of freshly baked bread topped with sour cream and chives. We only saw these in Cologne and Zurich, so make sure to try them here! Andrew says it's the best sandwich he's ever eaten in his life - and he's a sandwich fiend.
Riesling – when is Rome, I mean, Cologne Christmas Markets, right?! This regional white german wine is offered at many stalls along with staple local dishes.
Gluhwein – The mulled wine here is simply unparalleled. After years of exploring Christmas markets around Europe, sampling countless variations of this quintessential holiday drink, it was at the Cologne Christmas Markets where we found our favorite gluhwein. And the mugs! Adorable is an understatement.
Bretzels – fun fact, pretzels are called bretzels in Germany! For some reason, they taste extra delicious freshly warmed then eaten in front of a well lit Christmas tree with a hot cup of gluwhein.
Bratwursts – you can’t come to Germany and not try some brats! Head to the nearest booth and try one (or several) of the many different varieties.
Feuerzangenbowle – a delicious specifically german take on mulled wine which literally translates to fire tongs punch. They torch and melt sugar over the giant bowl of mulled wine, add a few extra touches such as an orange liquor or rum, and serve it piping hot.
Hot Aperol - you won't find this drink everywhere, and while it's not for everyone, it's a great treat and a big change from the mulled wine flavor! Andrew did not like it at all, but Kait loved it. It can be found at the Angel Market where it's served in a beautiful wine glass which can make for a stellar souvenir.
