Is the Malmo Christmas Market Worth It?

Malmo, Sweden, isn't the first city that comes to mind when planning a European Christmas market trip, but if you’re in Copenhagen, is a quick train over worth a visit? We’ve visited over dozens of Christmas market cities in Europe to find our favorites from all corners of Europe. Here’s your guide to what you need to know about the Malmo Christmas market before you plan your Scandinavian Christmas trip.

What to Expect at the Malmo Christmas Market

Unlike the bustling Christmas markets of larger cities, Malmo's market is a very intimate affair. If you're planning a trip to Copenhagen, Malmo is a short train ride away. Consider visiting both cities and experiencing their unique Christmas markets. It’s a great option for those who prefer a quieter, more local experience. The market is usually held in the heart of the city, surrounded by charming streets and historic buildings.

While the Malmo Christmas market may be smaller in scale, it still offers a delightful array of festive treats and handcrafted goods. From cozy knitwear to intricate wooden ornaments, you’re sure to find at least one small sweet Swedish souvenir or gift. We did love to see that they sold plenty of greenery, garland, plants, and flowers that were perfect purchases for the locals. These are too tough to buy and bring home as a tourist, but many locals were eyeing them with as much admiration as we were! Though there’s no market booths of full dishes or even varied types of savory bites nor mulled wine or alcohol of any kind, you can indulge in traditional Swedish treats like gingerbread and hot cider.

While the Malmo Christmas market is charming, it's a relatively quick visit. You can easily explore the entire market in about 30 minutes. However, it’s a great way to spend a leisurely afternoon, especially if you're already in the city for other reasons. While the Malmo Christmas market may not be as grand as some of its European counterparts, it offers a unique and authentic holiday experience.
